Jordan Blacker
Why did you become an RIBA member?
Before becoming a chartered member I was a student member of the RIBA, it granted me access to networks, events, resources, and conversations going on within the industry and greater field. Once I qualified in October 2018 I decided that I would like to broaden my experience internationally. I felt that being a chartered member of the Royal Institute of British Architects would provide me with a way to communicate to international employers my professionalism, commitment, and status within the Architectural field through a recognized gold-standard professional body.
What is the J1 Trainee Visa?
J1 trainee visa programs allow foreign professionals to come to the United States to gain exposure to U.S. culture and to receive training in U.S. business practices in a chosen occupational field (Architecture). The program enhances my skills and expertise in Architecture and the business of Architecture through participation in a structured and guided training-based program. The J1 Visa provides on-the-job training and ensures productive employment and a skill-building experience. GACC California is my sponsoring organization in the USA, and my host company is Cox Graae + Spack Architects in Washington DC. GACC California helped me through each step of the program and offered me support, from finding employment, to general day to d life in the USA. I would recommend the J1 route for anyone seeking to gain architectural experience in the USA through a training-based program. Be sure to check that you meet all the eligibility criteria first.
WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS DO COX GRAAE + SPACK ARCHITECTS DO?
CGS Architects’ primary projects are institutional. The buildings are owned and occupied by our clients, such as various schools, houses of worship, etc. We design for their specific communities, needs, and missions.
WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED MOST ABOUT THIS TRAINING PROGRAM?
I would have to say the overall immense growth as a person that I have felt during this time by embracing and learning from American culture. Which, I believe is just as important as the career skills attained.
